Slovenian Spirit on the Trail: Celebrating 3,000 Hiking Miles

By Sylvester (Syl) Staniša

At 85 years of age, Peter Osenar continues to demonstrate that age is no barrier to adventure. Recently, the Cleveland Hiking Club recognized Peter for reaching an impressive milestone – 3,000 official hiking miles with the club – considering that he has only been a member since September 2017. It is an accomplishment that reflects years of dedication, perseverance, and genuine love of the outdoors.

For Peter, hiking has never been simply about counting miles. Every trail has offered an opportunity to experience nature, enjoy the companionship of fellow hikers, and discover new places. His passion has taken him well beyond Northeast Ohio.

Among his many adventures, Peter has walked portions of the historic Camino de Santiago in Spain, explored the breathtaking landscapes of the American western national parks, and hiked throughout the majestic European Alps. In 1993, he fulfilled a dream cherished by many Slovenians when he reached the summit of Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia and the crown jewel of the Julian Alps. Standing at 9,396 feet, Triglav is more than Slovenia’s highest mountain – it is a cherished national symbol. Reaching its summit is considered a badge of honor, and Peter proudly joined those who have stood atop this legendary peak. Closer to home, he has enjoyed the scenic beauty of Allegheny State Park, the Finger Lakes wine country in NY, Watkins Glen State Park NY, and is a familiar face on the trails of Cleveland Metroparks, where he continues to hike several times per week.

Peter’s achievement is especially inspiring because it reflects an active lifestyle that has continued well into his eighties. His enthusiasm for hiking encourages others to remain physically active, embrace new challenges, and appreciate the beauty of God’s creations. Whether the trail is a neighborhood Metropark or a mountain path in Europe, Peter approaches each hike with the same sense of curiosity and gratitude.

His 3,000-mile recognition by the Cleveland Hiking Club is more than a number. It represents thousands of footsteps, countless friendships made, unforgettable adventures, and a lifetime of healthy living.

The Slovenian community has long cherished a love for mountains, forests, and the outdoors. Peter Osenar embodies that tradition with every mile he hikes. His accomplishment is one that makes not only the Cleveland Hiking Club proud, but also the Slovenian-American community.

Congratulations, Peter, on reaching this remarkable milestone. May the trails ahead continue to bring you health, happiness, friendships, and many more miles.

Peter reminds me of an old Slovenian proverb: “Kdor hodi, daleč pride.” “He who keeps walking goes far.”
