Celebrating the Voice of a Generation

Humans have organized their history in numerical divisions in order to better understand the experiences which occurred during those divisions. A group of 10 years is called a decade. 10 decades makes a century. 10 centuries become a millennium. A group of 30 years equals a generation.

The events of the generation begun on April 17, 1996 are worth a brief review. On that date Edi Mejač assumed the leadership of the radio program “Songs and Melodies from Beautiful Slovenia” from the able hands of Milan Pavlovčič. The transfer of leadership signaled a generational shift as well. Dr. Pavlovčič had come to the US as a political refugee after World War II. Edi was a born American raised in the Slovenian community of Cleveland. Though both were from different generations, they shared the same values, principles, and love for Slovenian Catholic culture.

There has also been a shift in technology which has marked the show during Edi’s tenure as host and producer. The program was broadcast by a college radio station when he took over. WCSB aired two hour-long programs each week on Sundays and Wednesdays. After CSU ended its radio station recently, “Songs and Melodies from Beautiful Slovenia” became available as a podcast on SlovenianRadio.com. The show can be heard beginning at 8:00 AM every Sunday. Hopefully you heard the anniversary broadcast on April 12 of this year. If you didn’t, just go to the website and check it out in the archives. Nice thing about a podcast, you never really miss a show.

Several of Edi’s friends thought it was high time to honor his anniversary as host and producer of “Songs and Melodies from Beautiful Slovenia”. So, an ad hoc committee was formed under the title Friends of SlovenianRadio.com. The purpose of the committee has been to organize a celebration of Edi’s work for the last 30 years.

The event will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2026 on Slovenska Pristava. The celebration begins with a Mass offered by Father John Retar at 1:30PM. A dinner will be served afterward. It will be followed by a brief cultural program. Traditional picnic refreshments will be available for purchase as well.

Tickets for dinner cost $30.00. Reservations can be made by calling Mrs. Natalie Bowser (216) 256-7449 or Mrs. Ann Marie Zalar (440) 539-6825. Tickets can be picked up at Pristava on the day of the event. Due date for reservations is Friday, May 15, 2026. Since there will be a limited number of dinners served, make reservations as soon as possible so you won’t miss the deadline.

Come out to Slovenska Pristava on May 31 and enjoy yourselves. Spend the day “Celebrating the Voice of a Generation” Edi Mejač.
