Agnus “Aggie” Aukscunas (nee Troha), 102 years old. She was born on Dec. 30, 1923 as the daughter of the late Jennie and Frank Troha in Barberton, OH. She grew up in Barberton then spent her adult life in Manchester near her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very close to her brother Frank and her nephews Frank Jr and Victor along with their families. She was employed at Goodyear Aerospace during WWII, where she met her 2nd husband Ed. Aggie embraced her culture with being active at the Slovene Center. Her adult life was filled with babysitting her grandchildren, sewing, golfing, swimming, and traveling. She loved going back to Europe with her mother, road trips in the U.S., and Windjammer Cruises throughout the Caribbean with Ed. She spent her later years caring for Ed, enjoying family gatherings, getting out of the house for a good meal or trip to the casino, and watching golf tournaments, the Indians and Cavs with her son Ron. Aggie is survived by her grandchildren, Vicki, David, and Wendy. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward Aukscunas; daughter, Cheryl Just (Kline); son, Ronald Kline; brother, Frank Troha; and nephew, Victor Troha. A private burial took place at Holy Cross Cemetery. 

Neda M. Bogatay, 78 years old, passed away July 24, 2026. Neda was born on Aug. 18, 1947 in Croatia. Neda lived a life marked by devotion to God, deep love for her family, and quiet acts of kindness that touched everyone who knew her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest joy was caring for the people she loved. Family was the center of Neda’s life. She found joy in the simple and meaningful things, such as cooking and baking. She was a fantastic cook. Wife of Frank for 33 years. Mother of Robert Mosack (Monica) and Michelle Mozes. Grandmother of Natalie, Christine, Alexander, Katherine, Julia, and Robert, and great-grandmother to Baylor, Emilia, Conrad, and Henry. Survived by her sister, Mary. Aunt and great-aunt of many. Robert L. Boyce Jr., 60 years old. He was born May 2, 1966, as the son of the late Robert Sr. and Louise Boyce. Rob was a former general manager at Rainbow Muffler. Member, AMLA Lodge #30 and Eagles Club #4086, Wickliffe, OH.  in Wickliffe. Father of Eric (Danielle) Boyce, Brandon Boyce, and Kayla Boyce. Grandfather of Haley, Isaac, and Jace Boyce. Longtime loving companion, Stephanie Sorohan, and her daughter Sheridan Sorahan, and grandchildren Nolan, Joshua, and Sophia Sorohan. Brother of Joseph (Christine) Boyce, and the late Vince Boyce. Dennis A. Cvelbar, 83 years old, passed away July 28, 2026. Dennis was born Nov. 24, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was an active as a mass server at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Cleveland for many years. Father of Darryl (Perri), Marc Cvelbar (Deborah Gollin), and Daniel. Mary “Karen” Ely (nee Klemencic), 67 years old, passed away July 29, 2026. She was born Oct. 11, 1958, in Euclid. Karen attended, respectively, St Mary School, Mentor, Lake Catholic High School, and then graduated from Fairview Hospital School of Nursing as an RN. Karen worked as a traveling nurse with assignments in Boston, Florida, and Hawaii. Afterwards she came back home and worked in the Cardiac Cath Lab and Interventional Radiology departments. Timothy D. Frimel, 64 years old, passed away on July 23, 2026. He was born May 8, 1962, as the son of the late William and Dolores Frimel (nee Kosir). Member, Alcoholics Anonymous. Jaro E. Gogala, 82 years old, passed away Aug. 5, 2026. Jaro was born in Slovenia Nov. 2, 1943 as the son of the late Jaroslav and Frančiška Gogala (nee Krč). Husband of the late Susan (nee Shiffer). Charles J. Herbst, 61 years old, passed away July 30, 2026. Husband of Angela (nee Koncar). Step-father of Melissa Koncar (Tyler Trost). Son of Charles J. and the late Francine (nee Laural) Herbst. Ruth J. Hribar, 100 years old, passed away Aug. 4, 2026. Ruth was born in Cleveland and raised in the Collinwood area. Mother of Nancy (Michael) Podboy and Mary Lou (Gary) Zamler. Grandmother of Stacy (Robert) Zupancic, Amanda Egrek, and Scott (Rafaela) Sullivan. Great-grandmother of Taylor & Halle Zupancic, Addison Giffin and Noah & Liam Sullivan. Ivanka “Jennie” Kogovsek (nee Rus), 93 years old, passed away Aug. 6, 2026. Jennie was born Oct. 4, 1932, in Log pri Brezovica, Slovenia. Her childhood was marked by many hardships and uncertainty of war (WWII and civil war in Slovenia), experiences that shaped the strong and resilient woman she would become. In 1958, she legally emigrated to the USA. In 1963 she married Frank Kogovsek at St. Vitus Church whom she knew from Slovenia and who had also legally emigrated to the USA. Together, they built a family and a life in America, raising five children. Jennie was employed as a seamstress at Richman Brothers and later at Fisher Body, Euclid, OH.  in Euclid. Jennie was a wonderful cook. Her kitchen was a place where family gathered and memories were made. Jennie’s greatest legacy was the love and strength she gave to her family: she was the backbone of the family. Wife of the late Frank Kogovsek. Thomas A. Kraynak, 85 years old, passed away July 27, 2026. Tom was born June 12, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio as the son of the late  Alexander and Margaret (nee Lenart) Kraynak. Tom graduated from Cathedral Latin High School, Class of 1959. He was an alumnus of Bowling Green State University. A founding member, St. Matthias the Apostle Parish, Parma, Ohio. Tom’s career was as a Sales Manager. He also served his community, City Councilman in Seven Hills, Ohio, elected in the 1980’s and again in 2015. Member, 12-Step Recovery. Husband of Karen. Father of Reverend Michael (Carol) and Christine. Grandfather of Rachel, Amanda, Katelyn, Abigail, Theresa and Alexander. Dorothy Jane Kuklua (nee Malley), 98 years old. Wife of the late James P. Mother of of Mary Ann Maxson and Judy Hamilton. Rosanne Madeja, 78 years old and daughter of the late Thomas and Rosemarie (nee Liptak) Madeja. Sister of Carolyn Dohn (Donald), Karen Madeja, Michael Madeja (Kim). Aunt of many. Rosanne was born Apr. 22, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from Euclid High School then Bowling Green State University. She studied at Cleveland State University where she received her master’s degree in education. After graduating with her master’s, she taught 16 years at Garfield Heights High School, Perry High School, and lastly at Eastlake Middle School. Member, St. Noel Parish. She attended bible study and was a Eucharistic minister, lector, and choir member. Member, St. Lawrence Parish, Fairhope, AL., her retirement locale. Member also of Lake County Retired Teachers, Ohio Retired Teachers, First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, and AA. Graveside Service was at All Souls Cemetery. Helene Mausser (nee Hutter), 86 years old, passed away July 17, 2026. Helene was born June 30, 1938, in Seele Gottschee, part of Slovenia. The family fled to southern Austria as refugees at the end of WWII due to the imposition of a Communist system in Slovenia. In 1952 Catholic Relief Services assisted the family to legally immigrate the USA and settled in the Cleveland area. Wife of the late Arnold. Mother of Richard (Jane), Caroline Kurtz (Tom) and Elizabeth Belec (Craig). Grandmother of Jennifer Misso (Rob), Karin VanCure (Chad), Daniel Kurtz (Aubrie), Stephanie McCarthy (Patrick), Rebecca Belec, Erica Bukowy (Brooks), Sarah Stellato (Vinnie), Kevin Belec, Michael Mausser, Brian Mausser, Rachel Mausser (fiancé Drew Maxwell) and great grandmother of 25. Preceded in death by her parents Franz and Pauline Hutter, siblings Hilda Rom (Rudolf), Herbert Hutter (Joan living), and Annemarie Schwarz (Klaus). Gates S. Mavar, 24 years old, passed away Aug. 12, 2026. Gated was born June 2, 2002. He graduated from Eastlake North High School of 2020. He the earned an associate degree from Lakeland Community College, before completing a bachelor’s degree from Cleveland State University. Son of David M. (Brandi) Mavar and Cassandra L. Welter. Sibling of Jacob B. Nunney and Logan A. Mavar. Grandson Susan Mavar. Nephew of Robert Welter III, Lisa (Bob) Stanich, Jennifer (Jeremy) Newton-Smith and Amy (Nathan) Thompson; and cousin of Jessica, Hannah, Benjamin, Leo, Alice, Marty and Clara. Preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald Mavar, L. Harold “Hal” J. Pekol, 82 years old, passed away peacefully Aug. 5, 2026. Hal was born Mar. 27, 1944, as the son of the late Albert and Mary Pekol. Husband of the late Carlene C. (nee Kellhofer). Father of Mark, Catherine (Jeff) Gorman, Beth (Marcio) Pekol Porto, Anne (Kyle) MacLeod, Julie McNulty, and Nancy (Ryan) Schneider. Grandfather of Stephanie, Brittany (Jimmy), Keith (Moriah), Nicholas, Nathan, Halle, Annika, Elsa, Kaeden, and Ryann; and great-grandfather of Charlotte, Bennett, and Alice. Also preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and Bill Pekol. Hal was a dedicated educator, teaching for over 30 years. He was known for his joy of cooking food from his Slovenian heritage, loved music and dancing. Kyle Perko, 34 years old, passed away July 10, 2026. He was born Aug. 8,  1991. Kyle was employed as a carpenter in the construction union and, in his free time, was always working on carpentry or house projects. Kyle was a loyal friend. He grew up loving to fish and spending time at his family’s dock with friends and family. He also enjoyed snowboarding, golfing, and cycling. He loved to hike with his family dogs. Son of Deborah “Debbie” (nee Kane) Perko. Brother of Christopher (Mallory Potondi) Perko. Survived by many aunts, uncles, and  cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Perko. Ornella Radolovi (nee Fornazar), 92 years old, passed away peacefully. Ornella was born in Rakalj, former Yugoslavia, now Croatia. In 1969 Catholic Relief Services helped her and family members legally immigrate to the USA, and they settled in the St. Clair Avenue neighborhood off Norwood Road, Cleveland, Ohio. Wife of the late Pacifico Radolovi. Mother of Mirela Ahmetovic (Salih), Svetlana Radolovich and Marino Radolovich. Grandmother of Melissa Lessick (Frank) and Samir Ahmetovic (Ashley); and great-grandmother of Lindsay Lessick, Danny Lessick, Avery Ahmetovic , and Aiden Ahmetovic. Friend of many. Lillian Sadowski (nee Legan), 99 years old. Member AMLA Lodge #27 and Maple Heights High School, Class of 1944. During WWII, Lillian enrolled in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and continued her career working as a registered nurse. Also, member, St. Columbkille Parish. Wife of the late Edward Sadowski. Mother of Lynn Kossakoski (Harry “Gene”) and Gary (Cindy) Sadowski. Grandmother of Katie, Alex, Ed, and Melanie Taylor (T.J.). Lillian was the youngest of six children of the late Frank and Antonia Legan. Michael “Mike” Shank, 57 years old, passed away July 31, 2026. Mike was born Jan. 31, 1969, as the son of the late Gene and Carol (nee Cecconi) Shank. Mike graduated from Riverside High School before attending Hocking University, earning a degree,  Applied Police Sciences. He was also a graduate of the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University and the College of Urban Affairs, Public Safety and Management at Cleveland State University. Mike joined the Perry Village Police Department in 1990 as a part-time patrolman. He was promoted to sergeant in 1995, and lieutenant in 2001. While working part time for Perry Village, Mike also employed for the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) in Cleveland. In 1991 he was promoted to the Detective Bureau (Vice/Narcotics). He was assigned to the Federal Drug Task Force from 1994–1998 and was promoted to sergeant in the narcotics unit in 1998, then lieutenant in basic patrol in 2001. He served as patrol commander from 2004–2006. He left CMHA in 2006 to work full time for the Perry Village Police Department where he would eventually take the position of Chief of Police for them from 2012–2014. He retired in 2015. Father of Devin and Michaela. Long-time girlfriend, Holly McGeever; his sister, Debbie Slovick; his nieces, Rachel, Allyson and Claudia Slovick; his cousin, Mark Reid and his best friend, Clint Ovalle. Funeral arrangements are pending with services to be held at a later date. All arrangements entrusted to Lake Erie Cremation & Funeral Services. 

Rina Skender (nee Grzincic), 87 years old, passed away July 27, 2026. She was born Dec. 24, 1938, under Italian occupation. Under the “new” Communist Yugoslavia, she grew up tending to her family’s farm and became a bookkeeper, taking night classes in Rijeka after high school. She also helped to care for her niece Mariza and nephew Miren in Zagorje and a fellow Klanjica who lived in Postojna, Slovenija. To suppress her opposition to the “new” government, she was “permitted” to Italy in 1959, due to her birthright to Italian citizenship. She then lived and worked in a refugee camp in Trieste, Italy. She was then offered a job in Naples, Italy, and then Bergamo, Italy, living in Italy for six years. She was then sponsored to Euclid, Ohio via her aunt and uncle. She purchased a one-way ticket to the USA, arriving in Apr. 1965. She became employed at, respectively, Pic n Pay and then General Electric, Nela Park. Learning English proved to be another turning point in her life as she met her future husband and love of her life, Davorin Skender (David as she would call him later in life), of all places in English night courses at Euclid High School. Thinking he was German and him thinking she was German with her blonde hair, they introduced each other in the language until they had to tell the class where they were from: both revealing their Croatian origins and almost guaranteeing a 1st date. She married Davorin Skender in 1968 at St. Mary Church, Collinwood, by her priest uncle, Fr. Jerko Grzincic. She was a naturized USA citizen in 1970. She was active in the Greater Cleveland Italian, Croatian and Slovenian communities. Member, former St. Felicitas Parish. Member, The Shrine of Our Lady Of Lourdes, Euclid, OH. Survived by her husband, Dave (Davorin) Skender; son, Davorin (Dave) Skender (Joelle); and grandchildren, Juliana, Janica, Jeronim, Jenevieve, Jinny, and Joana. Sibling of Ivana Androic (Mirko. deceased), Teodora Medvedic (Tone), Paula Janson (Manfred), and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Rudolph “Rudy” Skrjanc, 92 years old, passed away July 25, 2026. Veteran, U.S. Army. Spent 42 dedicated years as a skilled Union carpenter. Husband of Betty. Father of Scott Skrjanc (Trish) and Michael Skrjanc (Patricia). Grandfather of Melissa Mastroianni (Mike), Kelly Skrjanc, Courtney Skrjanc, and Kayla Skrjanc; and great-grandfather of Aiden and Kate. Preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Vida Skrjanc, sisters Freda (Frank) Levar and Dolores (Ray) Hruska. Family and friends were received at Monreal Srnick Funeral Home. Paul A. Snyder, 93 years old. Sof the late Frank L. and Mary F. (nee Sadar). Brother to late Frank V., Sister Ann Marie, James M., Jean McGrath, Joseph I., Dorothy McCarthy, James J., and Joseph T. Michael J. Strancar, 62 years old, of North Ridgeville, formerly of Mentor, passed away July 15, 2026. He was born on Aug. 19, 1963, in Cleveland. Mr. Strancar was a Lead Process Engineer for Crankshafts at the Ford Motor Facility for 30 years, retiring in 2024. Michael was a graduate of Mentor High School and Cleveland State University, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also enjoyed tending his garden and growing fresh vegetables. He shared his bounty with coworkers. Son of Gail A. (nee Blessinger) Strancar. Nephew of Norma (Jim) Claflin, Beverly Blessinger and Diane Mester. Cousin of many. Preceding Michael in death are his father Dale Strancar and uncles Ken Blessinger and Robert Mester. Robert C. Znidarsic, 64 years old, passed away July 3, 2026. Known as “Uncle Bob,” he was born Feb. 20, 1962. Bob graduated from Euclid High School, Class of 1981. He was a proud, dedicated employee at Euclid Hospital for 40+ years. Bob was a gentle soul, who triumphed over much in his life. He was a dependable, hard worker who will be remembered for his kindness, humbleness, enthusiasm, and sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles R. (Sue) Znidarsic and sister Kim J. (Daniel) Pecchio. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Znidarsic; siblings Susan Weninger (Karl, deceased), Pam Urban (Dan, deceased), Scott (Jennifer) Znidarsic, along with nieces and nephews Chris (Michelle), Tim (Lauren), Katie (Dustin), Alicia, Matthew (Camille), Parker (Morgan), Maggey, Elise, Scott, Christina, Michael, Joseph; (8) great-nieces/nephews, many loving cousins, and friends. Mirko Zudic, 71 years old, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Husband of Ann (nee Cesar). Father of Michael (Hayley), Michelle Applebaum (Josh), and Daniel (Nicole). Grandfather of Jack, J.J., Luka, Mila, Josie, Madalena, and Marko. Son of the late Milan and Ana Zudic. Brother of Maria Kobal and Nevia Avzlahar (Drago, deceased) and brother-in-law of Steve and Leighann Cesar. Uncle and great-uncle of many. Mirko was born Feb. 6, 1955, in Prapoće, Croatia. He spent his childhood until his family legally immigrated to the USA in 1968. He wrote a book about the memories and hardships his family endured as they looked forward to a better life and opportunity. Veteran, US Air Force, where Mirko served as an aircraft mechanic and was able to travel extensively throughout Europe, being stationed in England. After honorable discharge, Mirko returned home and graduated with a degree in business at Cleveland State University.  He was then employed as a purchasing manager in manufacturing. He enjoyed coaching his children’s soccer teams and was very involved in the local ethnic community. Mirko believed in the value of hard work and treasured time spent with family. At the request of the family, all are requested to consider donating blood in Mirko’s memory through the American Red Cross or making a donation to the American Cancer Society. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. John of the Cross Church followed by burial with full military honors at All Souls Cemetery. Marie Helen Kanta (née Resetic), 98 years old. Daughter of the late Joseph Resetic and Agnes Resetic (née Kovacic). Marie was educated in Joliet, IL. She graduated, respectively, from St. Joseph Elementary School, Class of 1941 and Joliet Township High School, Class of 1945.  Marie entered the workforce during WWII when US soldiers were off at war. Supervisor at Gerlach Barklow. Wife of the late Joseph Kanta. Mother of Jane (Jim) Juricic, Eileen (Jim) McCann, and Larry Kanta. Grandmother of Jim Juricic Jr., Christopher Juricic, Sarah (Mike) Dusel, Jennifer (Scott Wallace) McCann, Bradley (Cheryl Chavez) Kanta, and Amy Kanta; and great-grandmother of Ryan (Grace) Juricic, Andrew Yurkus, James Cosentino, and Jack, Owen, and Luke Dusel. Sibling Bernice (late Emil) Ramsak; sister-in-law Monica (the late Ben) Kanta. Also preceded in death by siblings Joseph (late Ann) and Edward (late Marge) Restic; and Agnes Koscik (late Frank) and Frances Pajak (late Lou). Mary Kranjec, (nee Vlasic), 90 years old, died on March 30, 2026 in Green Bay, Wi. She was the fourth child of Matija and Angela Vlasic of Kraška Vas (near Brežice) in Slovenia. During World War II the family was forced to leave their home and go to a D.P. camp in Meddersheim, Germany to work on beet farms. They lived there for nine years waiting for a sponsor through Catholic Charities in order to come to America. They arrived in New York in November of 1950. The family was helped to come to Chicago where a cousin, Luis Dolmovic, provided employment. Fr. Fortunct was of great help to the family at this time. Mary married Bogomil Kranjec on June 29, 1957 at St. Stephen’s Church in Chicago. They were blessed with two children, Cynthia (Kranjec) Ketter and John Kranjec. They have four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by two siblings, Angela (Vlasic) Balaker of Carlsbad, Ca. and Vince Vlasic of Thousand Oaks, Ca. Mary loved her Slovenian heritage and enjoyed dancing and singing, especially the šmarnica at St. Mary’s in Lemont, Il. She and her husband worked very hard and owned and operated two motels: The Wood Motel in Michigan and the Travel Inn in Indiana. She will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.

Theresa Marie “Cookie” Krasovec, 85 years old, Pueblo, CO. passed away on May 1, 2026. She was born on February 27, 1941, in Pueblo, as the daughter of the late Anna and Frank Krasovec. She earned a Fine Arts degree from the University of New Mexico. In the 1950s, her father recognized her talent and brought her along on jobs painting billboards at Runyon Field in Pueblo. Theresa was also a gifted musician. She learned the accordion as a young girl, playing Slovenian polkas, traditional Italian songs, and her beloved Christmas carols. An accomplished seamstress, she designed and sewed wedding dresses for two of her sisters and tailored a dress for her nephew’s bride. She was also a fine knitter, gardener, and baker. For 32 years, Theresa was a special education teacher at Pitts Middle School in Pueblo District 60. After retiring from the district, she continued teaching reading at Pueblo Community College. In her later years, traveling with her daughter Laura. Also preceded in death by siblings Frank Charles Krasovec and Frances Ann Britz. Survived by her loving Laura Stoker Townley, son-in-law, Derek Townley of her sisters, Carol Krasovec and Kathleen (Richard) Hostetler, and Eileen (James) Cain of Windsor; and numerous nephews and nieces. A rosary was said followed by Funeral Mass of Christian Burial St. Mary’s Church, Pueblo, CO. Wr. Note: St. Mary (Help of Christians) is the Slovenian parish in Pueblo, CO., established circa 1895 to serve the Slovenian immigrants. 

John M. Maskal, 77 years old, passed away July 18, 2026. John was born Mar. 5, 1949, in Johnstown, PA. John was employed as a sales & service representative. Husband of Barbara. Father of Michael (Carla) Maskal, and Emily (Frank) Zagar. Grandfather of Ben. Brother of Kathyrn (James) Kolar. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha Maskal. Joseph S. Musick, 100 years old. Husband of the late Virginia. Joe was born on Feb. 17, 1925, Waukegan, IL. Son of the Frank and Jennie (nee Jeraj) Music’ who legally emigrated from Slovenia and married in Waukegan. Joe grew up in a household with a strong Slovenian heritage. He was the youngest of seven: Frank, Al, Bill, Jean, Millie and Fran. After graduating high school, Joe enlisted in June 1943 and joined the US Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 4th Marine Division. A combat veteran serving in WWII fighting in the Pacific theater. He fought in four major battles and was injured on Iwo Jima beach. He was Honorably Discharged in Oct. 1945 and awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. In 1951, Joe joined the Waukegan Fire Department, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, and retired in 1978. Member, St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish.  Also preceded in death by his oldest daughter Cheryl. Survived by daughters Judi (Michael) Dulson, Wendy (Michael) McBride, and all his grandchildren. Visitation was at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, followed by interment at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.

Stefanija Antonija Pavlin (nee Stukelj), 97 years old, passed away Aug. 4, 2026. Stefanija was born Jan. 13, 1929 in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. Preceded in death by her husband Peter and son Gregory. Survived by Peter Jr. (Belina) and Teresa (Jamie). Grandmother of Steven, David, Bronwyn and Teagan. Her early life was in Rucetna. In 1945, she fled Slovenia with her brother Antone and lived for several years in an Italian refugee camp before legally immigrating to Canada. She was hired as a contract laborer working as a maid in Quebec. With support of the Catholic religious women order, Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul (Halifax), she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Saint Vincent University and later her library science degree at the University of Toronto. She dedicated 35 years to the special library branch at the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications. She served as president, Special Libraries Association, during her career as a librarian. Volunteer, Catholic Cross-Cultural Services. She also provided translation support to a refugee family from Bosnia. Member, St. Gabriel’s Passionist Parish. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at Our Lady Of Miraculous Medal Church followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. 

Philip Edward Ruppe, Former Congressman U.S. Rep., 99 years old, an Upper Peninsula native who served six consecutive terms in the U.S. Congress, passed away Aug. 5, 2026 in Bethesda, MD. Ruppe represented Michigan’s 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from Jan. 3, 1967, Jan. 3, 1979. Philip was born Sept. 29, 1926, Laurium, MI. His grandfather, Peter Ruppe Sr., a Slovenian immigrant who moved to Hancock in 1864, co-founded the family’s retail business, with partner Joseph Wertin. The storefront stood at the current location of the Copper Country Community Arts Center on Quincy Street in Hancock. Ruppe and Wertin amicably dissolved the partnership, each operating their own businesses. While the Ruppe venture grew into one of the most prominent mercantile businesses, P. Ruppe & Sons, the Wertin business eventually became the prominent Vertin Bros. Department Stores. Phil Ruppe graduated from Calumet High School, Class of 1944.  He then entered the Navy V-12 officer training program during WWII. The military program sent him to Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan before he ultimately finished his degree at Yale University in 1948. After his education, Ruppe was called up to operational duty during the Korean conflict, serving 24 months on active combat duty as a Navy lieutenant. After honorable military discharge, Ruppe returned home to manage the family’s regional investments. He worked extensively in the private sector, managing banking and broadcasting assets across the U.P. while serving as a director for the Houghton National Bank. He served as a director for the Commercial National Bank of L’Anse. His work heavily involved directing community capital toward post-war economic development across Houghton and Baraga counties. From 1983 to 1986, he served as president of the Woodlak Company, a Houghton-based private bank holding company. In 1966, he launched his campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives to win the seat for Michigan’s 11th Congressional district. During his 12 years in office, Ruppe frequently worked across the aisle on international delegations. His work in Congress reflected his private sector goals of economic development and expansion. As copper mining declined, Ruppe prioritized transitioning the region toward a mix of sustainable timber production, light manufacturing and tourism. He pushed federal aid to stabilize hard-hit northern communities, most notably by sponsoring the Regional Development Act to inject economic assistance into rural municipalities. Ruppe was member of the House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, advocating for regional industrial expansion. He defended the maritime economy by securing federal funding for icebreakers to extend winter navigation seasons, directly benefiting U.P. Ports. In 1982, Ruppe unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate while in 1992, he ran for Michigan’s 1st Congressional District but was defeated. Husband of the late Loret (nee Miller). Father of five daughters. Loret served as national director of the Peace Corps, 1981 to 1989 and U.S. ambassador to Norway, 1989 to 1993. Loret passed away Aug. 6, 1996.  In 2000, Ruppe married Ann Hammond Boutell, who passed away in 2022. Ruppe’s daughter, Loret Miller Ruppe, passed away due to breast cancer at age 45. Ruppe retired to private life and then devoted his time to philanthropy, enjoying Civil War history groups and engagement in civic organizations. Member, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ruppe focused his efforts on regional philanthropy, providing foundational funding to establish modernized learning facilities at his alma mater, CLK Schools. He was known for his humility and fondness of his Slovenian heritage. Funeral plans are still pending. Wr. Note: The Ruppe and Vertin families have a long history in the UP Michigan area, going back to Venerable Bishop IF Baraga. The son of Slovenian immigrant Joseph Vertin, John Vertin, was the first priest ordained by Bp. Baraga in Marquette. John Vertin would then become the third bishop of the diocese of Marquette, serving from 1879-1899. Over the course of his 20 years as bishop, Vertin oversaw an increase in the diocese’s Catholic population from 20,000 to 60,000, the number of churches from 27 to 56, and the number of priests from 20 to 62.

Christine Agnes Schwegel (aka Svegel), longtime resident of Potrero Hill (San Francisco). Christine was one of ten children, born in Calumet, MI to Margaret and George Merver. Her family moved to Tonopah, NV. She moved to San Francisco as a young girl and worked as a secretary for many years. Wife of the late Peter. She and Pete spent time together at Slovenian Hall there. Lifelong baseball fan. Member, St. Boniface Parish and St. Theresa Parish. Member, Slovenian American Fraternity and Beneficial Society. Also preceded in death by her niece Marjorie Steele. Survived by nephew Henry Judnick, Suzanne Steele and many grand-nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at Driscoll’s Valencia St. Serra Mortuary.

Nancy Jean Yovanovich (nee Cerne). Wife of Alex (deceased). Mother of Alex (Andrea), Annette Yovanovich (Steve Mayberry) and Timmy (Christine). Grandmother of Alexander Yovanovich and Sophie Yovanovich. Also preceded in death by her parents, Frank Cerne and Stephana (nee Turk) Cerne and her sister Frances (Cerne) Leone. The family lived in the Indianapolis neighborhood known as “Haughville,” and were members of the only Slovenian parish in Indian, Holy Trinity Parish (now closed). Member, KSKJLIfe (St. Aloysius Lodge). Member, Slovenian National Home. The family moved to Brownsburg, IND. And became parishioners of St. Malachy Parish. , with all three of their children attending St. Malachy school. Nancy and Alex make traditional homemade smoked “krajnska klobasa” sausage for the Christmas celebrations, as well as potica. Nancy served as the Reading class teacher at St. Malachy School and then was employed as a Court Reporter for Judge Robert Bayt in the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Indianapolis for 20 years. Nancy graduated from St. Mary’s Academy High School and then Marian College. Visitation was at Matthews Mortuary. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Malachy Church, followed by graveside service at Calvary Cemetery.
