Eileen Shirley Ivancic, 91 years old, passed away Nov. 7, 2025. She was born Sept. 5, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (nee Unetic) Cichon. Wife of the late Frank Ivancic. Mother of Shirley Ivancic Stall and Cathy Ivancic. Grandmother of Jennifer (Manny) Nieves, Matthew (Eliette) Stall, and Gregory Stall, and great-grandmother of Manny and Danny. Also survived by her sister-in-law, Joanne Ivancic. Also preceded in death by her sisters, Laverne (Frank) Hlebak and Betty (John) Veneskey. Family and friends were received at Monreal Srnick Funeral Home. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Noel Church, followed by interment at All Souls Cemetery. 

Jack J. Grdina, 78 years old. Husband of Sandra (née Simmons). Father of Sarah Grdina Gilmore (fiancé Jason Wolfe), Jack John Grdina, Jr. (Autumn), and Nicholas Grdina (Gillian). Grandfather of Jackson and Liam Gilmore and Arianne, Jack John “JJ,” and Thomas Grdina. Son of the late Jack John and Frances (née Zillis). Brother of Andrew Grdina (Cathy). Brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, and friend to many. Jack was born on July 15, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in Euclid and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Class of 1965. He went on to attend Western Kentucky University. Member, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Jack spent many years as the owner and operator of his own collection agency. An avid and accomplished golfer, member of Aurora, Shaker Heights, Sharon, Barrington, and Pinehurst Country Clubs. He earned 14 club championships and recorded nine holes-in-one. In 1996, President, Northern Ohio Golf Association. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at Our Lady Chapel at Gilmour Academy, followed by burial at Aurora Cemetery. Family and friends were received at DeJohn Funeral Home, Chesterland, Ohio.

Dr. Joseph Ernest Kastelic, M.D., 97 years old, passed away Dec. 19, 2025. Joe was the son of Slovenian immigrants and grew up in the Slovenian neighborhood of Maple Heights and distinguished himself early with a deep love of learning. He graduated, respectively, from Maple Heights High School, John Carroll University (on a full academic scholarship) with a Bachelor of Science degree; and then graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine, Class of 1959. He was a hematologist/oncologist, devoting his work toward caring for children with life-threatening illnesses, such as leukemia and other blood disorders. He practiced for over 30 years at his beloved Akron Children’s Hospital. His career also included academic and leadership roles at St. Luke Hospital in Cleveland, University of Michigan, and Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine where he was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics. Joe found joy in traveling, reading, skiing, singing in the choir at St. Sebastian Church and spending time with his family. Preceded in death by parents, Louis and Antonia Jordan Kastelic, siblings Robert Kastelic and Bernadette Kastelic Rudolph, and his former wife Jo Anne King. He is survived by wife Cathy Kastelic; children Kathy (Mike), Kevin (May), Joe (Teresa), Sue, Tim, John (Margaret), and Jeff (Julie); grandchildren Mike, Tim, Nicholas, Christopher, Jonathan, Katie, Claire, Joey, AnnMarie, Megan, Marissa, Brady, Kathryn, Madelyn, Julien, Lauren, and Ethan; great grandson, Abe, and his brother, Lou Kastelic (Betty Ann), and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Sebastian Church, Akron, Ohio followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. 

Kenneth Kutnar, 84 years old, passed away Jan. 5, 2026. He was born Apr. 6, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio as the son of the late Frank and Josephine (nee Svet) Kutnar. He was employed for over 40 years with Union Local 880 as a diligent employee and manager. Husband of Judith A. (nee Belevice). Father of Christopher (Wanda), Kimberly Yuras, Michelle Luoma, and Brian. Grandfather of Kyle Serafin, Thomas Yuras, Logan Yuras, Jake Yuras, Megan Luoma, Christopher Kutnar, Jr., and Jordan Fleming (Bernhardt). All services were held at Jakubs-Waite Funeral Home, Eastlake, Ohio with interment at All Souls Cemetery. 

Joyce Marie Kvet, 86 years old, passed away Dec. 23, 2025. Wife of the late Roger (Veteran, US Armed Forces). Mother of Kathy Drotos (David) and Karen Payne. Grandmother of Jesse, Luke, Noah and Eden Drotos and Joseph Kvet-Payne. Daughter of the late Joseph and Minnie (nee Pubal) Svec. Sister of Joan Bloam (Earl); sister-in-law of the late William ( Rosalind); aunt of Eric Bloam (wife Dawn), Todd Bloam, Stacy Kvet (partner Ryan Krapf) and Bryan Kvet and great-aunt of many. Joyce was born on Feb. 15, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio. She and her identical twin sister Joan were raised in Newburgh Heights and enjoyed doing everything together, including roller skating, twirling batons and being teen models for local businesses including Higbee’s Department store. She graduated from South High, Class of 1957. She dedicated a significant amount of time with the Cleveland Society for the Blind in the 60s, Cambridge Candies in the 80s, and Hawken School in the 90s. Member, Mayfield Church. All arrangements were handled by DeJohn Funeral Home. Burial was at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.

Rosemary Mlakar (nee Novak), 96 years old, passed away Dec. 30, 2025 in California. Originally from the Minnesota Mesabi Iron Range, Rosemary was born Sept. 22, 1929. She was most recently a resident of Irvine, CA. Rosemary married a native of Chisholm, MN., Joseph J. Mlakar, son of Slovenian immigrants Jakob and Mary Mlakar, in 1949. Rosemary was mother of five children: Joe Jr., Fred, John, Martin, and Teresa. Mary loved Joe’s style of button box accordion playing, performing, preserving, and promoting Slovenian folk songs and Cleveland style polka music. Mary was greatly involved in Slovenian Union America (SUA), Branch 100, southern California. Member, and SNPJ Orange County 786. As economic conditions deteriorated in the Mesabi Iron Range, the Mlakar family moved to California in 1959. They settled in Fontana and became involved in the local Slovenian American community. Joe purchased a night club about a half mile south of Route 66 in 1961, calling it “Mlakar’s Elbow Room.” The Elbow Room became an established West Coast hangout and watering hole for local and traveling polka fans and musicians. Joe formed a Slovenian singing society, Slovenian Men Choraleers of Northern Minnesota. Wife of the late Joseph J. Rosemary is survived by children Joe (Teresa), Fred, John (Lucille), Marty (Patti) and Teresa (Ken) Koci; and 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral details are still pending. Darwin J. Nemec, 60 years old, passed away Dec. 13, 2025. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Nov. 23, 1965, as the son of the late John and Gina Nemec (both deceased). Darwin attended Euclid Senior High School and Bowling Green State University. He is survived by his sister, Patty Smith (Jim Bergant), niece Caitlin (Danny) Peterson, nephew Alex (Ashley) Smith and great niece and nephews Ava, Aiden, Carter and Xander. A private graveside service at All Souls Cemetery will be held in the spring 2026.

Colleen Anne Pecek, 43 years old, passed away Dec. 29, 2025, Florida. She had lived in Florida since 2012.. She was born Dec. 12, 1982, in Euclid, Ohio, as the daughter of Gary and Penny Pecek. Sibling of Gary Pecek and Elizabeth Wood. Aunt of Leah Seufer; Gary Pecek, Zachary Pecek (Odalis), and Dylan Seufer; and her great-aunt Estela Segura-Pecek. Also survived by Garth Ferdinand. Preceded in death by her grandparents, Edward and Mildred Pecek, and Justin and Louise Lelii. Funeral service was held at Jakubs-Waite Funeral Home followed by interment at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens.

Donald Lee Smrdel, 85 years old, passed away Jan. 5, 2026. He was born Oct. 28 1940. Veteran, U.S. Army. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at Divine Word Church with private interment at All Souls Cemetery. All arrangements were handled by DeJohn Funeral Home. 

Reverend Michael J. Troha, 73 years old, passed away Jan. 3, 2026. Rev. Troha was currently pastor, both Immaculate Conception, Willoughby, Ohio and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wickliffe, Ohio parishes, diocese of Cleveland. U.S. Veteran,  Military Chaplin, four years active duty and six years active reservist, retiring from the military in 2002 with the rank of Major. Rev. Troha was ordained to the priesthood for the diocese of Cleveland on June 7, 1980. Rev. Troha was engaged as a speaker on the life of “stewardship,” as understood in the Catholic Church. He was a frequent lecturer through Catholic Stewardship Consultants. Rev. Troha was a “defender of the bond” diocese of Cleveland as well as a member of The Priestly Advisory Council (Cleveland Catholic Foundation). Rev. Troha attended and graduated from, respectively, St. Christine School (now closed, forced to merge), St. Joseph High School (now VASJ HS) and then received bachelor’s (1975) and master’s degrees (1976) from Catholic University of America. He had a Master Divinity degree, St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland, Ohio. Rev. Troha as a Roman Catholic priest for 45 years. He served, respectively, as an assistant pastor at St. Bridget of Kildare Parish and St. Rose of Lima Parish. In addition to serving as military Chaplin, he also served in El Salvador at mission parishes sponsored by the diocese of Cleveland. He was a pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish (Cleveland), St. Ignatius of Antioch Parish, Immaculate Conception Parish (Willoughby) and also Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Wickliffe). Rev. Troha is the son of the late Milan (Veteran, Sgt., US Army, WWII) and late Gizella Troha (nee Zardin). Rev. Troha is the sibling of Mel (Jan), Mark (Carol), Cathy (Michale) Gorman, Mary Jane (Tom) Galliher), Joseph (Diane), Carol Ann (Robert) DeMinico, Peter (Mary), and Christine (Patrick) Leneghan. Nancy Ulrich, 83 years old. Nancy was born Mar. 16, 1942. She was a diploma degree RN from Akron General, a community counselor at Portage Path Mental Health, and a charter member of Concord Singers, Summit Choral Society and Masters Singers, with a degree in vocal performance from the University of Akron. Wife of Ron. Mother of son Keir (Janet). Sister of Joyce Piry (Al). Grandmother of Alex, Zoie, Jimmy and Julie (Logan), and great grandmother of Maizie, Mia and Mikaila. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Sebastian Church, Akron, Ohio. 

Virginia T. “Ginger” (nee Laurich) Ulrich, 87 years old, passed Dec. 26, 2025. She was born July 19, 1938. Wife of the late David T. Mother of Marlene (Joe) Matteo, Michael (Sherry Dolsak), Karen Ulrich, Daniel (Shawn) and Donna (Bob) Turk. Grandmother of Nolan (Kimberly) Carnett, David (Amber) Carnett, Julia Carnett (Greg Spakes), Melissa (Daniel) Parrella, Tyler (Nicole) Carnett, Carmen Matteo, Joey Matteo, Lauren Anthony, Brian Anthony, Allison Ulrich (Anthony Demary), Madelyn Ulrich (Dawson Frederick), Cory (Madison) Smith, Jenna (Nate) Carter, Jacob (Mia) Smith, Cayce Ulrich (Brian Williams), Kaitlyn Ulrich, Cori Ulrich (Ben Preheim), Emma Ulrich, Amanda Turk (Frankie Bolek), Alyssa Turk (Matt Hillard) and Abigail Turk; and great-grandmother of David, Daniel, Diego, Hailey, Landon, Everett, Elijah, Noah, Beau, Casey, Breanna and Gunnar. Member, Eagles Aerie (Aviary) and Immaculate Conception Parish. Also preceded in death by her parents, John and Eleanor (nee Reminder) Laurich. Ernest Nicholas Malnar, age 79, passed away peacefully on Nov. 25, 2025. He was born on Dec. 5, 1945, to Louis Malnar and Olga (nee Brinsek). Ernest proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after a short period of service—something he carried with pride and gratitude throughout his life. He was a man of many passions. Ernest loved computers and photography, always eager to learn something new or capture meaningful moments through his lens. A loyal Cleveland Indians baseball fan, he enjoyed following the team and sharing that enthusiasm with those around him. He also enjoyed bowling, a pastime he shared with friends and family over the years. Ernest was known as an exceptionally hard worker. Throughout his career, he served as a supervisor at every place he worked, earning respect through his dedication, reliability and strong leadership. Above all, Ernest deeply cherished his family. He idolized his granddaughter, Malina Ann Malnar, and could often be found at her softball games, proudly cheering from the stands. His devotion to his loved ones was the foundation of his life. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Teri Lynn Malnar; his sons, Nicholas (Melissa) Malnar, of Painesville, Ohio, Michael (Cheri) Malnar, of Chardon, Ohio; and step-son, Scott Brining, of Louisville, Ky.; his beloved granddaughter, Malina Ann Malnar; and his ex-wife, Patricia “Boots” Malnar. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Olga Malnar; as well as his sisters, Genevieve Malnar, Mary Ann Steele and Teresa Malnar. Visitation was held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, from 2-4 p.m., with a service immediately following at 4 p.m., at Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 116 South St., Chardon. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff, nurses and aides at Concord Ridge Health and Rehabilitation for their exceptional care and kindness during Ernest’s stay. Ernest will be remembered for his warm spirit, his strong work ethic, his curiosity and enthusiasm for the hobbies he loved, his honorable military service and the deep love he shared with his family. Frances “Fay” Belcher, 97 years old, passed away Jan. 15, 2026. Fay was born on Feb. 16, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Anthony Zaller and Frances (nee Lavrich) Zaller. She grew up in a closeknit Slovenian family and carried those traditions of faith, hospitality, and joyful living throughout her life. Fay retired from the Ohio Bell Telephone Company after 19 years of dedicated service. She was admired for her strong work ethic, her kindness toward coworkers, and her ability to brighten even the busiest days with her warm smile. Wife of the late Frank D. Belcher. Mother of Tom (Patty Morgan) Belcher. Grandmother of Megan and Shannon. Sister of Alice Kufrin, Robert Zaller, and the late Raymond Zaller. Aunt and great aunt of many. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. John Vianney Church followed by burial at All Souls Cemetery. All arrangements handled by Jakubs Funeral Home. 

Michael F. “Miha” Dolinar, 66 years old. Miha was born on Dec. 31, 1959 and passed away January 16, 2026. Husband of Christine (nee Kucmanic). Father of Katarina Kulbis (Matthew) and Marina Dolinar. Grandfather “Stara Ata” of Emily “Emmy”, Eleanor “Ellie”, Abigail “Abby”, and Nicholas “Nicky” Kulbis.  Son of Pauline (nee Adamic) and the late Frank. Brother of Edward, Lydia Gadd (John Gorshe) and brother-in-law of John and Majda Kucmanic, Joseph Kucmanic, Albin and Marla Kucmanic. Uncle, great-uncle, and friend of many. Miha was an accomplished guitarist and singer in The Alpine Sextet. He loved Slovenian folk songs as well as all styles of music and sang in a number of Slovenian singing groups. Miha was also a member, St Mary Parish and a number of American Slovenian fraternal benefit societies. Family and friends were received at the Zevnik-Cosic Funeral Home. Alan F. Dutka, 83 years old, passed away Jan. 11, 2026. Husband of Priscilla (nee Baits). Father of David, Susan Benz (Tyler), and Diane Ghorbanzadeh (Michael). Grandfather of Daisy Benz and Daniel and Samuel Ghorbanzadeh. Brother of the late James Dutka. Family and friends were received at Nosek-McCreery Funeral Home. Final funeral services were held at Lake View Cemetery Wade Chapel. Wr. Note: Mr. Dutka wrote a book “Slovenians In Cleveland, A History” on the Greater Cleveland Slovenian northeast Ohio communities of Newburgh, St. Clair and Collinwood neighborhoods. He included tales of WWII prison camp escapes and bizarre bank robbers who threatened (then) St. Clair Savings and Loan Bank. The book provided accounts of the East Ohio Gas explosion and Collinwood school fire. Additionally, it included neighborhood resident rise to professional sports stardom, its musical contributions, song and musicians, and national political prominence such as US Senators Frank J. Lausche and George Voinovich. He had authored seven previous Cleveland history books, including “Misfortune on Cleveland’s Millionaires’ Row.” 

Rose L. (Lariccia) Fuduric  (nee Perich), 92 years old, passed away Jan. 14, 2026. Former wife of late Pete Lariccia. Mother of Peter Lariccia (Nada), Maria Briganti (Frank), Rosanne Martin (Jim), Theresa Damel (Scott) and Linda Mercadante ( Joe). Grandmother of Joseph Mercadante (Dawn Malaney), Andrew Lariccia, Anita Negrelli (Mark), Eric Lariccia (Claudia), Frank Briganti (Mandy Aldhizer), Dominic Mercadante (Ashley), Matthew Martin, Kevin Martin, Natalie Adams (Nate) and great-grandmother of Isabel, Eleanor, Amelia, Mateo, Isabella, Francesca, Victoria, and Archer. Daughter of late Dorothy (nee Fuduric) and Mike Perich. Sister of Lucille Nolan (Jim deceased). Aunt and great-aunt of many. Rose was born June 10, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio. Member, St. Mary The Assumption Parish, Cleveland. She graduated from Collinwood High School, Class of 1951 where she was also a member of the crocheting club and Slavoj music group. Her favorite musicians and singers were Frank Yankovic, polka music, Al Green, and Frank Sinatra. Joseph V. Hocevar, 80 years old, passed away Jan. 21, 2026. Joe was born in Feb. 10, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio as the son of the late Slovenian immigrant parents, John and Anna Hocevar (nee Jakopic). Brother of the late Ann Arhar (Edward, deceased) and late John. Uncle of Joanne, Christine (Paul) Cevasco, Margie (Wolcott) Pugh, Edward (Cheryl) and John (Paula). Great uncle of Nathaniel, Caitlin, Megan, Christopher, Daniel, Laura, Matthew, Lindsay, Taylor and Joseph and great-great uncle of Ryan, Brendan, Adeline and Eliana. Joe was affectionately known as “Mr. St. Vitus” due to his involvement in St. Vitus Parish. He was treasurer, St. Vitus Holy Name Society. Member, St. Vitus Alumni, St. Vitus Catholic War Veterans Post 1655, and St. Vitus Finance Council. Joe was the business manager, St. Vitus Parish, since the late 1990s. Treasurer of, respectively, St. Vitus Endowment Trust and St. Vitus Development Corp. Former member and singer, Slovenian men’s choral group. Dedicated volunteer, St. Vitus Bingo, for ten years, volunteering each Friday. Member, St. Vitus KSKJ Lodge #25, St. Anne Lodge #4 AMLA, (former) Baraga Court 1617 COF, and Friends of Slovenian National Home (St. Clair Avenue). Joe resided his life in the Slovenian St Clair Avenue neighborhood, off Addison Road and the past number of years at St. Vitus Village. Joe was also actively involved in the former city of Cleveland Ward 23 politics, working as a ward leader for a number of decades. Joe was an integral part in the development and construction of St. Vitus Village, a $6.0 million three story 33 suites structure, privately funded circa 2000-2001 and the new parish social hall, circa 2020-2021. He was instrumental in the development of St. Vitus Endowment Trust circa 1989. Joe had served on the national board of directors, American Slovenian Catholic Union (KSKJLife) and an officer, St. Vitus Lodge #25 KSKJ. He supported the Bishop Baraga Association and the independence movement in Slovenia in the early 1990s. Member of a committee to review scholarships for both Mihevc Grant Program at St. Vitus as well as reviewing qualified applicants for St. Vitus Lodge #25 KSKJ. He traveled widely with his late brother and friends, visiting Slovenia, Canada, Australia and a number of European countries numerous times. Confidant of many clergy, religious and individuals involved in numerous organizations. His easy going way and approach in life were his gifts to many people, as well as his honesty, work ethic, and devotion to faith, family and friends. Joe graduated, respectively, and with honors, from St. Vitus Elementary School, St. Joseph High School and John Carroll University, where he received a business administration degree with a background in accounting, finance, economics, and management. After working in private industry for a number of decades, Joe accepted an offer to become the parish business manager due to his business background and active involvement in parish life.  Joe was a committee person for the annual three-day parish Summer Festival and two-day annual fall festival (1960s-1990s). Joe remained in the capacity as business manager until his untimely passing Jan. 21, 2026. He had a compassionate heart and inclination to help individuals in need, supporting the parish food bank/pantry, initial work of Joseph House of Cleveland Inc., St Vitus Society of St. Vincent de Paul and support of the former hot meals served at St. Vitus via St. Paschal Baylon Helping Hands Ministry. He worked tirelessly with other individuals on matching funds from KSKJLife and AMLA to benefit the parish community at large as well as the broader American Slovenian communities in northeast Ohio. Viewing was inside St. Vitus Church one hour prior to the Funeral Mass of Christian Burial followed by private burial at All Souls. At the request of family members, donations in memory of Joseph V. Judy Kalish, 86 years old, passed away Jan. 2, 2026. Judy was born Feb. 26, 1939 as the daughter of the late John and Agnes Wasil. Judy served as a longtime legal secretary for Zele & Zele Co., L.P.A., retiring in 2009. Dual parishioner, Ss. Robert & William and (forced merged) Holy Cross Church, Euclid, and St. Mary of the Assumption in Mentor. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy, Class of 1956. Wife of the late Ronald A. Kalish. Mother of the late Daniel J. Kalish. Survived by daughter, Laura L. Kalish; grandchildren, Hannah (Daniel) Kunc and Jacob Kalish; great granddaughter, Harper Kunc and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Kalish (née Straube). Family and friends were received at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, followed by burial at All Souls Cemetery.

John T. Kocevar, 91 years old, passed away Jan. 20, 2026. He was born May 15, 1934, as the son of the late John “Jack” and Rose (nee Zala). Former Mayor of South Euclid for 12 years and South Euclid City councilman for nine years. Husband of Theresa “Terry” (nee Svoboda). John was employed in the clothing manufacturing business, working in Hong Kong for a two-year work assignment. 2-year work assignment. He was then employed at the IRS for 12 years, retiring at age 85 years old. George M. Kolar, 58 years old, passed away Dec. 28, 2025. George was born to the late Audrey Kolar and Stephen Kolar. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing the drums while later in life he found peace and comfort in the quiet serenity of fishing. He faced health challenges during much of his adult. George worked for many years at Special Moments Catering, where he remained committed and gave his best, despite life’s challenges. More recently, he worked part-time as an electronics tech. Also preceded in death by his brothers, Steve Kolar and Robert Kolar. Survived by his brother, David Kolar (Kanitta), and their son, Luke, and by his sister-in-law, Darlene. John S. Komar, 72 years old, passed away Jan. 15, 2026. John was born July 21, 1953. Husband of Janet (née Rusnak). Father to Chrissy Walter (Dave) and Jennifer Komar. Grandfather of David John and Thomas James. He loved music, especially polkas, reflecting his proud Slovenian heritage and joyful spirit. Raymond W. Koren, 93 years old, passed away Jan. 6, 2026. Raymond was born Oct. 20, 1032 in Cleveland, Ohio. Husband of Sandra (nee Mancini) and the late Dorothy (Mesojedec). Father of Patricia Fairman (James), Susan Foley (Richard deceased), Raymond (Julie), Thomas deceased (Rhonda), Christopher, and David (Courtney). Grandfather of 12 and great-grandfather of 10. Son of the late John and Louise (nee Champal). Brother of John, uncle, great-uncle and friend to many. Veteran, US Army. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School, Class of 1950. Attended University of Dayton. Employed as a general manager with Prudential Insurance. Member, Mayfield Village Racquet Club. Accomplished musician, playing accordion at the Slovenian Home. Sophie Kosem, 97 years old, passed away Jan. 20, 2026. She was born Apr. 23, 1928 as the daughter of the late Alojzij and Frances (nee Majdic) Kosem in Dol Pri Ljubljana, Slovenia. Sister of Mary Celestina (Miro deceased), Rev. Frank Kosem and the late Lojze Kosem, Ursula Stepec (Ciril deceased) and Marjan Kosem (Mira). Aunt and great-aunt of many. In May 1945, Sophie and her family emigrated to Austria as refugees. They legally immigrated to the USA in Sept. 1949. She graduated from high school in Austria at a displaced camp and pursued her higher education in the USA. She attended nursing school in Duluth, MN and then went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Case Western Reserve University and a Master of Education from John Carroll University. She worked as a nurse first at University Hospital and then Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights for over 32 years. She was also a school nurse for the Cleveland Board of Education, retiring at the age of 90 years old. Member, St. Mary The Assumption and Altar Society of St. Mary’s Church. Viewing was held one hour prior to the Funeral Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church, Cleveland, Ohio followed by burial at All Souls Cemetery. Joseph Edward Lipovac, 88 years old, passed away Jan. 4, 2026. Joe was born July 8, 1937, in Barberton to the late Joseph Carl Lipovac and Frances Teresa (nee Pavlic) in the Slovenian community. Joe graduated from Norton High, Class of 1955. He worked through college on highway construction. His education was interrupted in 1961 as he was drafted into the US Army, stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. He married Renate Martha Meeh. After honorable discharge, he graduated from Kent State University, Class of 1965. He was then an engineer at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He was awarded a patent in 1992 for the process of applying the signature yellow lettering on Goodyear racing tires. By the time he retired from Goodyear in 1999, 34 years of service, Joe had many other patents to his name. Member, Guardian Angels Parish, where he was also an usher. Patron of Barberton Slovene Center. Joe is survived by sister and brother-in-law Frances (Joseph) Szoke, and two daughters, Michele (James) Egleston and Heidi Lipovac. Grandfather of Madison Anne, Emerson Meeh, and Joseph Daniel. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at Guardian Angels Church.

Beatrice F. Pestotnik (née Jakomin), 99 years old, passed away Jan. 7, 2026. “Bea” was born Mar. 26, 1926, as the daughter of the late Ludwig and Frances (nee Grilc) Jakomin in Cleveland, Ohio. Wife of the late John S. Pestotnik. Mother of Linda M. Cimperman (Paul). She is survived by sister Bernadette Kotorac, daughters Marcia A. Dziczkowski, Sandra J. Eckart (Dennis), grandchildren Tricia Terauds (Ed), Allan Sinkovic, Scott Sinkovic (Vanessa), Tina Sinkovic (John), Tracey Sinkovic, Edward Eckart (Misty), David Sinkovic (Samantha), and 13 great grandchildren. Bea attended St. Vitus Elementary School and Jane Addams High School. She was employed at Ohio Bell. She was active in her daughters’ campfire girls’ programs, sewed costumes for their musicals, helped at her daughters’ schools, and a member of Tony Petkovsek’s Radio club, United Slovenian Society and other Slovenian organizations. She also helped raise funds for Slovenian Home For The Aged. Old Aged Home. Bea was a co-owner of Bernadette Bridal, designing headpieces and enjoying helping new brides find the perfect dress. She loved to sing with the Milan Racanovic polka band and Zarja Singing Society. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at Immaculate Conception Church, Madison, Ohio, where family and friends were received one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Burton I. “Burt” Saltzman, 88 years old, passed away Jan. 13, 2026. Burt was born in Cleveland in 1937; first child of Polish-Jewish immigrant parents who helped build what would become a local institution known as “Dave’s Markets.”  His grandfather, Alex Saltzman, sold produce from a horse-drawn wagon. In the early 1930s, Alex opened a small corner fruit and vegetable store at East 33rd and Payne Avenue. Burt graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in accounting. Veteran, U.S. Army’s Quartermaster Corps. After honorable discharge, he returned to Cleveland to join the family business. Dave’s Markets grew from a one neighborhood store to a regional chain. Burt ran the company for approximately 30 years, transitioning it to his two sons. Despite being CEO and chairperson, he could be seen operating a cash register in the checkout line, bagging groceries, fixing displays, or carrying out customers’ purchases. He was known for his generosity, supporting Catholic Charities, Frontline Services, Salvation Army, Greater Cleveland Food Bank, and many other causes. He was particularly keen on hiring young people who attended tuition paying schools, especially Catholic schools. Why? “They are paying their way through school and act in a responsible manner.” Husband of Judy. The father of Dan (Sandy), Steve (Chris), Trudy Stearns and Stacey (Bill) Grossman. The brother of Helene Krasney (Gary), and Deenie (Mayer) Wainstein. Grandfather of 12 and great grandfather of 11. Funeral Service was at Congregation Mishkan Or with private interment. Donald Lee Smrdel Jr., 85 years old, passed away Jan. 5, 2026. Don was born Oct. 28, 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio as the son of Slovenian parents, Ludwig and Ann (nee Pugel). Husband of Mary Louise (nee Sustar). Father of Donnie Jr. (Julianne), Diane Quintero (Forest Wilson), and Anthony (Donna). Grandfather of Vince (Halle), Jay, Allana, Mar, Quinn, Jay, Melanie (Todd), Matthew, and Ally. Sibling of Jan Zalar (Frank), LouAnn Lemmo (Rick), and late Ludwig “Butch” Smrdel. Uncle and great-uncle of many. He graduated from Collinwood High School. Veteran, U.S. Army (for three years, with a tour in Germany). Member, KSKJ, AMLA #6, and Divine Word Parish. He embraced his Slovenian heritage by being an active member in Slovenian fraternal lodges as well as spending time at the SNPJ Farm. Don was also a musician: he played the button box accordion and was an original member of the Euclid Button Box Club. Peggy “Joanne” Stack (née Robeson), 89 years old, passed away Jan. 2, 2026. She was born on Aug. 15, 1936, in Smoke Run, PA., daughter of the late Earl S. and Margaret (née Dobish) Robeson, was raised in Beccaria, PA. and moved to Cleveland, OH., in 1955. Wife of the late Andrew John Stack, Jr. Mother of the late Randolph Stack, Diana (Tommy) Foster, Cynthia (Cesare) Frabotta, and Sandra (Steve) Hurteau. Grandmother Nathan Hurteau and Alexander Hurteau. Sister of Earl S. Robeson, Jr. Debra (both deceased), Donald (Faye) Robeson, Marlene Pearce (Fiance, Lenny Phelps), and Kenneth (Donna) Robeson. Aunt and great-aunt to many. Joanne was employed at American Greetings from 1980 until her retirement in 2002. She found great joy in gardening, baking, cooking, and spending time outdoors. Norma Jean Tomoletz (nee Kausic), 88 years old, passed away Jan. 19, 2026. Mother of Joseph (Barbara) Tomoletz and Sandra (Tony) Grande. Grandmother of five, great-grandmother of seven and great-great grandmother of one. The sibling of Donna Kasunic, Sylvia (Jack) Hoffman, Steven Kasunic, and late Judith Cassinger. Joseph E. Urbas, 88 years old, passed away Jan. 24, 2026. Husband Cecilia (nee Tominc). Father of Theresa Wickline (Terry deceased), Lisa Riedthaler (Timothy), Joseph Urbas, Christine Weston (Bill deceased), Matthew (Antonia) and Andrew (Victoria). Grandfather of 21 and great-grandfather of 18. Son of the late Anthony and Olga (nee Koporc). Sibling of Leona Streiner (Stanley deceased), Lawrence, and the late Anthony “Jerome” (Darlene). Brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, and many friends. Joseph was born Oct. 8, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in the St. Clair Slovenian neighborhood on Cleveland’s east side and would often recall the chaos following the East Ohio Gas explosion of 1944. Joe was an alum from St. Vitus Elementary School. Joe graduated from St. Joseph High School, Class of 1955. He then attended Fenn College and had a long career managing Data Central at CEI. Joseph was an organist at St. Vitus Church. Member, Catholic Order of Foresters (Baraga Court 1317). He loved all sports, spending many decades playing baseball, softball, bowling, and golf. He also enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, gardening, cooking, and cheering on Cleveland sports teams. Joe’s friends and loved ones will always remember his delightfully quick wit and steadfast devotion to his loving family. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Vitus Church. Margaret (Peg) Urbas, 97 years old, passed away Jan. 23, 2026. Peg was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Cleveland, the daughter of the late John and Agnes Siebold.  She graduated from Mentor High School and enjoyed being the office secretary at Concord Elementary School, Auburn Career Center, and Broadmoor School for Retarded Children.  Upon retirement from Broadmoor, she enjoyed crafting with her husband. She was an avid sewer of garments and home decoration. Preceded in death by her husband, Donald and brothers Dick (Lorene) Siebold and Wayne (Joyce) Siebold.  Peg is survived by her daughters Kathleen (Eric) Cromwell, Eileen (Stu) Hurt and grandson Adam (Danielle) Hurt. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Andrej “Andy” Debevc, passed away after a long and painful bout with pancreatic cancer. Andrej was born in a post World War II refugee camp in Riccione, Italy on Oct. 9, 1946, as the son of the late Darinka (nee Komel) and Leopold Debevc. He contracted Polio during his time as a refugee. He was the middle of three boys. After the family settled in Harpersfield, Ohio, Andrej worked on the family fruit farm. He attended Cork Elementary School and then graduated from Geneva High School. He played music and toured the country with his brother, Peter, and their group, Ralph’s Rock Band. During his time with the band, he worked in various assisted living facilities. Husband of the late Patricia. Father of Leo. Andrej also attended Texas Chiropractic College, Houston, TX.  He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, uncles, aunts. Brother of Peter and Mark Debevc and their respective families. All arrangements were handled by Lake Erie Cremation and Funeral Services.

Victor A. Grdina, 92 years old. Victor was born in Cleveland on Sept. 6, 1933, to the late Jerome and Mamie Virant Grdina. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School in Cleveland and enlisted into the Army.  Husband of Anita (nee Hunt). Father of Robert (Terry), Victor (Linda) Jr., Scott (Kae) Grdina, Lauren Grimes, and Elaine Wanat. Grandfather of 15 and great grandfather of nine. He was employed at Ohio Bell / AT&T as a manager of mobile radio units until he retired. He was a hall of fame football player in high school and shared his passion by coaching his children and grandchildren in football, basketball, baseball and soccer. Since his retirement, he did woodworking and was a handyman to many. Also preceded in death by his siblings Jerome, Marie, Gertrude and Joyce. A final prayer service was held at Clemete Funeral Home. 

Katheleen Hall, formerly Moravcik (nee Haaser), 77 years old, passed away Feb. 4, 2026. Wife of Edward. Mother of Keith M. Moravcik (Maria) and Debra J. Moravcik, and stepmother of Michele L. Najdenovski (Goran). Grandmother of Zachary, Blake, Brandon, Paige, Trevor, Antonio, Ethan, and Zoran. Aunt of many. Sister of Phyllis Haaser-Zetts, Roberta L. Smith (deceased), Marsha L. Smith, James D. Haaser (Jane), Michael J. Haaser (Cecile DeLoy), and Carl J. Haaser (Trish). Kathy had a gift for writing poetry. She was employed in the field of computer programming as a career. Frank J. Hocevar, 101 years old. Husband of the late Irene. Father to David, Thomas, Laura, James, and Frank Jr. Grandfather to six. Brother of Charles (Frances) (both deceased), and Raymond (Margaret, deceased). Veteran, US Army, WWII. Cleveland Heights Police Officer and Detective. After retirement from the Police force, he served as head of security for Severance Mall. Member, Holy Family Parish and its Holy Name Society. Volunteer for various Church events. He was a loyal Cleveland Sports fan and especially loved the Indians. He had a love for traveling with his wife, especially when visiting their children and grandchildren. Richard J. Hrach, 86 years old, passed away Feb. 1, 2026. Husband of Phyllis (nee Plesmid). Father of Holly K. Traegner (Ralph), Dale J. Hrach (Sherri), and Wendy K. Ciehanski (Chris). Grandfather of Krystal Gagliardi, Kevin Traegner (Amber), Elise Hrach, Morgan Ciehanski, Jensen Ciehanski, and Jared Hrach, and great grandfather of Aliyah and Ella Gagliardi. Miha Istenič, 63 years old, noted Slovenian wine maker for decades in the Dolejnska Region, passed away in Jan. 2026. He successfully continued the family winegrowing tradition in Stara vas in the Bizeljsko region, which his father Janez Istenič started there practically from scratch after his arrival from Ljubljana. In 2023, after sixty years of work in winemaking, 55 of which he dedicated to the production of sparkling wines using the classical method in the Bizeljsko region, Janez Istenič handed over his exceptional winemaking legacy to his daughter Barbara and son Miha, who also included his sons Marko and Niko in the family winemaking, now the third such wine making generation. With innovation, intertwined with many years of experience, the Istenič family’s wines have reached a wide international audience. Their estate in Bizeljsko opened its doors to wine lovers, as well as professional meetings and prestigious cultural events. The Istenič estate in Stara vas in Bizeljsko was included in the Brežice European Film Festival. The wine center screened the film Bottle Shock, directed by Randall Miller. The Istenič family owns the oldest brand, they have the oldest red sparkling wine, the first flavored beverage based on sparkling wine in our country, and they were the first in Slovenia to produce brut sparkling wine. Their youngest sparkling cuvees are aged on their lees for at least two years, with most sparkling wines remaining on their lees for five or even six years. They bottle approximately 150,000 bottles of sparkling wine per year.

Cathryn Elizabeth Knezevich (nee Pranksevich), 71 years old, passed away Jan. 30, 2026. Cathy was born May 25, 1958, as the daughter of Frances (Franny) and Albert (Big Al) Pranskevich, both deceased. Also preceded in death by her sister, Joan Pranskevich Thompson. Wife of Timothy Knezevich. Mother of Christopher, Sandra, and Brian. The sister of Albert Pranskevich. Cathy attended Euclid High. She then obtained a bachelor’s degree in graphic design with a minor in Photography. She was employed at the Police Department as a patrol officer and a hostage-crisis negotiator. She then obtained a master’s degree in counseling at Cleveland State University and became licensed as a professional Clinical Counselor. She joined the Behavioral Wellness Group where she introduced the treatment modality of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Linda Marie Kostelnik (nee Grdina). Wife of Thomas Kostelnik. Daughter of Marie Grdina and late Jerome Grdina. Fred J. Krauss III, 66 years old, passed away Jan. 27, 2026. Fred was born on Feb 7, 1959. Father of Brian F. (Brittany) Krauss and Lindsay M. Krauss. Grandfather to Mason, Payten, Hudson, and Kaylie. Brother of Mike (Karen) Krauss. Brother-in-law of Dave Herpy. Uncle of many. Maria Kuharich, 94 years old. Maria was born on Sept. 28, 1931 in Slovenia. Maria immigrated to the United States in 1965, settling in the Collinwood area of Cleveland, before moving to Euclid and then to Willoughby Hills in 1978. Maria loved to cook and bake traditional Slovenian food, gardening and spending time with grandchildren and family. Wife of the late Albin. Mother of Silvan (Theresa) and Nevia Dininny. Marie A. Penko (nee Perusek), 93 years old. Wife of the late Charles J. Sr. Mother of twins Catherine Willard (deceased) (husband Tim) and Elizabeth Horsfall, Charles J. Jeanette “Jean” Quinn, 73 years old. Sibling of Barbara (James) McGraw and Michael. Aunt and cousin of many. Jean received her master’s degree from Case Western Reserve University. She focused on Healthcare and social issues. Jean was employed as a social worker, counselor, program director, and educator. She taught Sociology at Lakeland Community College for over 30 years, receiving an “Excellence in Teaching Award” in 2017. She also taught part-time at Cleveland State University, Lake Erie College, and Lorain County Community College. Past recipient of the Ohio HIV/AIDS Service Award. Member, St. Anne Lodge #4 AMLA. All services were private. 

Breda Radej (nee Cesarek), 82 years old, passed away Feb. 6, 2026. Wife of the late Leon Radej. Mother of Leon Radej, Jr. (deceased), Tanja Leskovec (William), and Anthoy. Grandmother of Christina and Mark Leskovec. Daughter of the late Franc and Angela (nee Arko) Cesarek. Sister of the late Draga, Dana, Majda, and Franc Cesarek. Aunt and great-aunt of many. Breda was born Feb. 7, 1943, in Ribnica, Slovenia where she would receive her primary education. She legally emigrated to the USA in 1959. She and Leon were then married in St. Vitus Church. A loving mother and homemaker. She took great pride in supporting Leon’s Auto Repair in Chesterland, working closely with her husband and son, Anthony, to help their family business. Member,  Slovenska Pristava. She also enjoyed classical and polka music, travelling, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. Michael K. Rode, 70 years old, passed away Jan. 19, 2026. He was born Mar. 22, 1955, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, to the late George and Patricia Rode. Father of Paul (Jamie) Rode, Thomas (Jacqueline) Rode, Jill (Jesse) Nolan, Courtney (Matt) Morris, and Lindsey (Patrick) Plataz. Brother of Thomas (Julie) Rode and Susan (Anthony) Farina. Grandfather and uncle of many. Preceded in death by his wife, Lisa (nee Prizzi), and his sister, Carol Rode. 

Robert ‘Bob” Frank Russ, 85 years old, only child of Frank and Eleanor (nee Putzel) Russ. Bob was born Oct. 19, 1938 in Helena, MT. Bob Russ was raised in East Helena, MT, where he grew up surrounded by parents and grandparents who had arrived in America from Slovenia in the early 1900’s. He learned to love the food, culture, and music of Slovenia. At 12 years old Bob followed in his father’s footsteps and began taking accordion lessons. He played baseball for the Smelterites, an East Helena team. He later became an umpire. He enjoyed bowling, running, ice skating, biking, hunting, sapphire mining, and attending baseball games. Member of the American Cribbage Congress and Helena Grass Roots Club #25. Bob graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula, MT. After graduation, Bob went on the road with a group of musicians known as the Sauerkrauts. Their travels took them to fairs, expos, and festivals. After retiring from traveling with the Sauerkrauts, he settled in Georgia and worked for the SKF or Svenska Kullagerfabriken (Swedish Ball Bearing Factory). Husband of Donna (nee McDuffie). Father of Bart (Sandy) McDuffie, Denise (Mike) Hampton, Dan McDuffie, Russ McDuffie, Angie (Jim) Erb, Kevin (Ann Marie) McDuffie, Pat (Chantelle) McDuffie, and Jay (Jessica) McDuffie. Robert Samsa, 90 years old, of Turtle Creek, PA., passed away Jan. 27, 2026. Husband of Mildred (nee Hopbell) . Father of Kathleen (Keith) Ruston, Linda (Mark) Ruston, Roberta (John, deceased) Kurta, and Joseph (Catherine) Samsa. Grandfather of Zack, Craig, Brandon (Claire), Bailey (Danny), Juli, Gina, and Luke, and great-grandfather of Brody. Preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rose (nee Anzlover) Samsa and siblings Frank (late Rose) Samsa and Dolores (late George) Carr. Bob was a 1954 graduate of Turtle Creek High School. Veteran, U.S Marine Corps where he served active duty for three years and five years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He then joined the Army National Guard. Bob was employed at Westinghouse in East Pittsburgh for many years until the plant shut down. Then, he became employed at the University of Pittsburgh in the Shipping and Receiving Department from where he eventually retired. Bob enjoyed golfing, hunting, gardening, and fishing and, on Sundays, he could be found relaxing and listening to his favorite polka music. Bob was proud of his Slovenian heritage and was a longtime member of Slovene National Benefit Society (SNPJ). Family and friends were received at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Turtle Creek / Monroeville Chapel, where a Blessing Service was held. 

Robert A. Skully, 82 years old. Husband of Judy (nee Allart). Father of Patricia Skully and Tim Skully (Kristi). Brother of Charles Skully (Kay) and late Gerald Skully (Nalene). Bob was a proud Slovenian American, Veteran, United States Navy, and member, St. Anne Lodge #4 AMLA. Bob was employed for more than 20 years with CDC (Control Data Corporation). All services were private. 

Sister Vera Virant, O.C.D, 91 years, member of the Carmelite Sisters for 72 years. Daughter of the late Leo B. and Vera (nee Grdina). Sister of Patty Jo Thornhill (John, deceased), Anita Louise Hall (Ned Hall II) (both deceased) and Leo B. Virant II (deceased). Aunt of Thomas B. Thornhill, Patricia Thornhill and Vera Rhea Thornhill, Survived by many cousins in the Greater Cleveland Slovenian community. Neice of the late Rev. Ludwig Virant and Rev. Louis Virant. Richard J. Zupancic Jr., 69 years old. Richard was born Mar. 6, 1956. He passed away following a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Husband of Susan (nee Duffy). Father of Josh and Beth (Craig) Supan. Grandfather of Jakob (Angelina), George, Roger, and Elliot. Brother of Karen Boodjeh. Son of the late Richard Sr. and MaryAnn (nee Grsic). Teresa Pivar (née Maučec), 92 years old, passed away Jan. 13, 2026, in Ottawa, Canada. Teresa was born in 1934 in Gančani, Slovenia, as the daughter of the late Viktor and Ana Maučec. She moved to Canada in 1955. There she met her future husband, Josef and together, they built a life and raised a family in Montreal*, later moving to Ottawa. She was a woman of deep faith and devoted love to her family. Teresa was predeceased by her husband Josef and son Joe, her siblings Jozef, Matilda and Antonia. She is survived by her daughter Maria (Denis), grandchildren Justin (Leigh) and Nadia (David) and three great-grandchildren Maebel, Oskar, and Sophie. A viewing was held at Tubman Funeral Homes Garden Chapel. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Philip Parish and St. Clare Mission, Richmond, ON, Canada. *Wr. Kristina Kuzmic, 94 years old, passed away Jan. 21, 2026. She was born Nov. 20, 1931 in Slovenia. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Josef Kuzmic. Mother of Vera. Grandmother of Billy (Trista), Ricky (Erin), Lisa (Amaris), and Laura (Andrew) and great-grandmother of Wilson, Lily, and Romy. To her family, she was lovingly known as “Baka.” Kristina was deeply proud of her Slovenian roots and spent many happy years at Bled, filled with dancing and laughter. She was also proud to call downtown Hamilton, Canada her home.  Kristina also leaves behind beloved family in Slovenia, including her brother, Franc. Family and friends were received at Markey Dermody Funeral Home. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church, followed by interment at Our Lady of the Angels Cemetery.

Maria Sossi (nee Jelenic), 95 years old, passed away Dec. 31, 2025. Maria was born in Racice, Slovenia, as the duaghter of the late Joze and Ivana Jelenic, in a family of ten children. She is preceded in death by siblings Joseph, Anthony, Carla Yurman late (Ermino), and Walter (in Australia). Wife of the late Victor. Survived by Branka, Edda, and Gloria, Liliana, and Emma (who all live in Australia). and their families all live in Australia. She survived WWII having tuberculous and was sent to live with her aunt and uncle in Trieste, Italy. She learned the trade of dress making and tailoring, and in 1956 was permitted with her husband to legally immigrate to the USA, sponsored by the Stupar family in Marquette, MI. In 1962 she became a naturalized citizen with her husband. She continued in her trade until accepting the position of housekeeper and cook for Bishop Mark F. Schmidt, bishop, diocese of Marquette. She remained there for eight years until Bp. Schmidt retired. She then “unretired” to be housekeeper and cook for Msgr. Louis Cappo, St. Peter Cathedral Rectory, for 12 years until finally retiring at the age of 75 in 2005. Member, Eucharistic Adoration Group and Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi. She served as a Slovenian translator for the Bishop Baraga Association. Volunteer, Dominic Jacobetti Veteran’s Home, visiting the sick and helping the veterans. Member, Marquette County Quilters Guild. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Peter Cathedral, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. 

Joseph (Joze) Mihevic, 101 years old Joze was predeceased by his wife, Anica (nee Zorc). Father to Anne (Vladimir Zagar), Joe (Rosalee Bender), Mark (Delia) and predeceased by Emily (John Ulcar) and John (Rebecca Cunningham). Grandfather of Rosemary, Dorothy (Brent), Julie (Mark), Justin (Lisa), Krista, Catherine, Christopher (Diana), Gregory (Ariana), Stephanie (Billy), Jesse, Sophie, Julia, David and Jonah; and great grandfather of 13. Joze was the last surviving member of his Mihevc family “druzina,”, predeceased by his siblings Ivanka, Tone and Milka. Friend of many in Canada, Cleveland, Ohio and Slovenia.  Joze was the son of the late Apolonija and Anton, Hrusevje, Slovenia in Feb. 3, 1923. Due to the imposition of Communism in Slovenia during and after WWII, he lived in southern Austria in a displaced camp for three years until legally being accepted to Canada in 1948. He was a skilled mechanic and builder as he kept TTC buses running safely for 36 years. Member, credit committee of a Slovenian credit union for 41 years. Volunteer, Red Cross, driving people to medical appointments. Funeral Mass was at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Toronto, Canada, followed by internment at Assumption Cemetery. A reception will followed in the church hall.

Michael “Mike” Mauser, 74 years old. Mike was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Aug. 11, 1950 as the oldest of seven of the late Kathleen (nee Kerrigan) and William Mauser.  Mike spent his youth in Cleveland and in Albuquerque, NM, where he graduated from Manzano High School. Mike then received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from University of New Mexico, Class of 1974.  He then, respectively, earned a master’s degree, Environmental Engineering, University of Alaska Anchorage and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1995. Husband of Helen M. (nee Hankins). Mike worked as an engineer for New Mexico Public Service Company. He supported himself as a carpenter while completing his certification from Fort Lewis College to teach math and science at the secondary school level.  He then taught at an alternative high school, Zuni Reservation, Grants, NM.  He then accepted a position with the U.S. Public Health Service/Indian Health Service, Anchorage, AL. He worked with Athabascan and Eskimo villages in Alaska.  He initially trained local Native operators in the function and maintenance of their water and sanitation systems. He then transferred to U.S. Public Health Service in Bethesda, MD. He finished his career in Elko, NV. Member, Rotary Club.  Also preceded in death by his sister Margaret Mauser Wilson.  Also survived by siblings Maureen Kelly(Dan), Dolores Chavez (Lorenzo), Bill (Patter), Frank (Deanne) and Joe(Melissa); his brother-in-law Karl Wilson; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Joseph Vucko, With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph Vucko, age 89, of Downers Grove, IL on December 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Joseph was born on March 16, 1936, in Gornja Bistrica, Slovenija. Joseph was the beloved son of the late Ignac and Katerina Vucko (nee Lonec). The son of farmers, he grew up working on the farm, going to school, and at age 18 left home to join the army. His travels took him to Austria, Italy, Monaco, France and eventually the United States of America in 1960. Starting a life in a new country, with only a few dollars in his pocket, as he told us many times, he stayed with family and friends, found work and soon after found the love of his life, Simone (nee Lorkovic). They were wed on September 2, 1962, in St. Stephen’s Church. They lived on the third floor of a three flat in Chicago’s Little Village before moving to Downers Grove in 1980. Joe worked in construction, earning full union membership as a bricklayer in 1966. He became a master at his craft, not only in brick and stone, but glass block as well. His attention to detail was always top notch. Joe was an avid fisherman. He loved the fishing trips to Canada with his family and friends in the early years and later with his friends. He was always talking about the fun times on the house boats! When Joe retired, he continued working his craft, only now it was working to help friends and family with projects, he also did work on the Slovenski Dom in Lemont. He enjoyed going to the picnics and events at the Dom. He had a garden and enjoyed projects at home, more recently, he was taking care of the wild birds and squirrels every day. Simone took ill and was confined to a nursing home. He visited her nearly every day for five years. He brought a smile to her face and special treats each time. He was a rock star at the nursing home because he talked to everyone and made everyone smile. He never gave up hope on Simone. He was devastated when she passed away on April 6, 2025. We shared a beautiful Christmas with Joseph, our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. You will be forever missed. Joseph was the beloved father to Kathleen (Anton) Glavac, Joseph, Jr., Kristeen (Joseph) Wilber, Stephanie. Proud Grandpa to Michael, Rachel (Michael) Wolverton, Meaghan (fiancé David) Glavac, Alexander Malmquist, Danielle Malmquist, Haley (Tyler) Hall, Luke Rosas, Levi Rosas. Adoring Dedek to Bradley, Matthew, Brooklyn, Madison, Liam, Emersyn, Liliana, (Baby Girl Hall Feb 2026). Big brother to Maria Vrstosek and friend to many. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Ignac and Katarina, his wife Simone, grandson Kevin Glavac, brothers Ivan, Ignac and Ferdinand and sister Vera. A visitation for Joseph was held at the Petkus Funeral Home, 12401 Archer Ave, Lemont, IL on January 8, 2026 from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral was held Friday, January 9, 2026 at the Slovenian Catholic Mission, 14246 Main St., Lemont, IL. Joseph will lie in state from 9:00am until Mass at 10:00am, burial to follow. A graveside burial followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Belmont & Cumberland Avenues, River Grove, IL 60171. Regina Tkalec, (nee Hozjan), 91, of Willow Springs, IL, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025. She was born on February 27, 1934, in Gornja Bistrica, Slovenia. Regina was united in marriage on October 26, 1956 to Ivan Tkalec. She immigrated to Regina, Sask, Canada in 1957 and then to Chicago, IL in 1967. Regina was a loving and caring individual who was very proud of her Slovenian heritage. She was a member of St. Anne’s KSKG Lodge, Holy Cross Society, Prekmurje Social Club and the Slovenian Catholic/Cultural Center. Regina was the beloved wife of the late Ivan Tkalec; loving mother of John (Gelse) Tkalec; dearest grandmother of Ethan Tkalec; devoted daughter of the late Helena (nee Vucko) and the late Adolph Hozian; dearest sister of Philomena (Gusti) Densa, Anna (John) Zemlic, and the late Cecelia Horvat, late Mary (late Ivan) Vuk, late Joseph Hozian and late Kazi Hozian; fond sister-in-law of Emma Hozian and Maria Hozian; also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation was Monday, December 8, 2025, 3-8 p.m. at Zarzycki Manor Chapels, Ltd., 8999 Archer Avenue, Willow Springs. Ada M. Debevc, a beloved and cherished member of the community, passed away on January 4, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on September 18, 1931, in Kapele, Slovenia, Ada lived a life full of love and dedication. Ada’s professional journey included significant contributions at Gregory Systems and Carol Block, where she worked as an electrologist. Her career was marked by her commitment and skill, earning her respect and admiration from colleagues and clients alike. Ada will be lovingly remembered by her cousins, Boris Zivic and Milena Gramc, along with other relatives and friends in the United States, Slovenia, and Croatia. Her family and friends were a significant part of her life, and she cherished the moments spent with them. In her personal life, Ada had a profound love for animals, particularly horses and birds. As a young adult, she was an equestrian, a passion that she carried throughout her life. She was also an avid gardener and crafter, activities that brought her much joy and fulfillment. Ada was deeply involved in her community, particularly through her active membership in the Slovenian Catholic Mission and the Slovenian Catholic Center. She dedicated her time volunteering at The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills, demonstrating her caring and generous spirit. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Slovenian Catholic Mission or online to the Slovenian Catholic Center in Lemont, IL, in honor of Ada’s memory and her commitment to her community. Ada M. Debevc’s legacy of love, dedication, and community service will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
